PTSD Awareness Month: How a Behavioral Health Program Can Help Manage Symptoms

ptsd awareness

June 27th is PTSD Awareness Day. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a condition that can occur in people who have witnessed or experienced a traumatic event like a natural disaster, personal assault or accident. Even though this condition is commonly associated with military veterans, it can happen to anyone. Treatments are available, but in order for them to work, people need a proper diagnosis and knowledge of these resources.

Without treatment, PTSD can lead to long-term problems at work, in social situations or when accomplishing everyday tasks. Untreated PTSD also puts a person at risk for developing depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts.

How Can I Tell if Someone Has PTSD?

PTSD occurs when a person has exposure to an upsetting event. This event could be anything, such as an auto accident, childhood abuse or the violent death of a family member. It’s not so much about the event itself, but rather how the person perceives it. Here are some common symptoms of PTSD:

  • Intrusive thoughts about the traumatic event
  • Deliberate avoidance of things, people, etc. that remind them of the event
  • Negative thoughts and feelings that don’t go away
  • Reactive symptoms like angry outbursts or irritability

What Treatments are Available for Treating PTSD?

It’s important that PTSD is treated, otherwise the traumatic event and its associated sights, sounds, etc. will live in the body and be triggered at different points in time. There are a number of treatments available for addressing PTSD, which your doctor can help you with. They may recommend therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and medications.

How a Behavioral Health Program Can Help PTSD Symptoms

Trauma can live in the body, which means it can resurface at various points in a person’s life. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for painful memories to come up in later life. If you or a loved one is showing symptoms of a mental health condition like PTSD, a behavioral health program can offer the education, training and care a person needs to heal. These services extend to the family members as well.

Here are some of the services offered through a behavioral health program like the one at Doctor’s Choice:

  • Skilled nursing
  • Personalized care
  • Medication monitoring
  • Self-care training
  • Coordination of therapy
  • Coping skills and problem solving technique
  • Support and training for family members
  • Emotional/psychological assessments

Additionally, being part of a behavioral health program can reduce hospital room stays and emergency room visits. Contact your doctor to learn more about the benefits of a behavioral health program and how it can help you or a loved one manage PTSD symptoms.
