5 Tips for Keeping Your Hips Strong and Healthy

keep hips healthy

Your hips are needed for many important motions such as sitting, standing, running and bending. It’s important to keep active for as long as possible because this keeps the joints and muscles healthy and strong. Unfortunately, the hip joints can wear out over time, leading you to need hip replacement surgery.

If you are concerned about your hip health, rest assured that there are many ways to keep these joints healthy and prolong or avoid the need for joint replacement surgery. Let’s review what these are and how to incorporate them into your life.

1. Exercise Moderately

Exercise strengthens the muscles in your back and hips. Even light exercise can help maintain strong muscles, slow bone loss and improve balance. Plus, exercising will help you avoid injuries in the future.

Some of the best exercises for the hips include:

  • Squats
  • Knee extension stretches
  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Swimming

Make sure that when you do exercise, you take the time to stretch out and maintain proper form. Also, any new exercise program should be discussed with your doctor first.

2. Practice Good Posture

When you stand, walk or sit using poor posture, this puts strain on the muscles that support the hips. Be sure to practice good posture when walking, sitting or standing so that the hip joints can function properly. Good posture also ensures the rest of your bones are properly aligned with the rest of the body, evenly distributing tension.

3. Maintain Healthy Weight

Even a few extra pounds can make a difference. Excess weight puts stress on your hips, which in turn leads to pain, especially if you have arthritis. If you’re at a healthy weight, continue to maintain this weight. If you’re overweight, even by a few pounds, talk to your doctor about the best way to shed these pounds.

4. Keep Your Home Safe

You might feel safest at home, but this is where the most accidents occur. Unfortunately, even a simple trip can cause damage to your hips because it causes the ligaments, tendons and muscles to stretch in unusual ways. Remove trip hazards from your home, such as power cords and clutter. Make sure all area rugs have non-skid pads underneath. Also clean or change out light bulbs so your walkways are well-lit.

5. See a Specialist

If you are experiencing hip pain, don’t delay in seeing your doctor. Some people wait because they’re worried about having a hip replacement, but there are many things that can be done before this. Your doctor may recommend certain hip strengthening exercises and other ways to control pain and inflammation. Seeing your doctor early can actually delay the need for surgery and protect your hip joint.

When you follow these tips, you’re not just taking care of your hips, but your body in general!
