5 Tips for Aging Gracefully

tips for aging gracefully

Every September we celebrate Healthy Aging Month. The purpose of this month is to make aging more attractive and attainable. Staying vibrant and active for as long as possible is something that most people want at any age! While the focus used to be on baby boomers, now Healthy Aging Month embraces all ages.

September is the perfect time to celebrate Healthy Aging Month because it’s a fresh start for many people. Kids are going back to school. Families are settling into new routines. The temperatures are more comfortable, making it easier to be outdoors. And it’s never too late to start aging gracefully.

Below are five great ways to support healthy aging – not just in September but every day!

1. Eat Whole Foods

By eating the right foods, you can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. You can also maintain a healthy weight. Focus on whole foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts and low-fat dairy products. Avoid processed and packaged foods, fatty meats, butter and salt.

2. Walk Every Day

Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Walking is a low-impact activity and you can break it up into three 10-minute strolls. Exercise keeps the brain healthy by delivering more blood and oxygen to the cells. Regular activity also improves sleep, boosts the mood and keeps the bones and muscles strong.

3. Talk to Your Doctor About Supplements

If you’re not getting enough vitamins and minerals from your diet, you may benefit from supplements. Talk to your doctor about which ones are best for you. Here are some of the most common vitamins that older adults need:

  • Calcium to keep your bones strong
  • Vitamin D – many people get deficient in the winter
  • Vitamin B12 helps you absorb nutrients from your foods
  • Vitamin B6 keeps your red blood cells strong

4. Socialize with Others

Isolation can take a toll on your physical and emotional health. In fact, some research shows that seniors who feel left out and lonely are more likely to develop dementia or depression. Lonely people are also more likely to have higher levels of inflammation, arthritis and diabetes, as well as a weakened immune system.

5. Add More Fiber to Your Diet

One of the ways to clean up your diet is by adding more fiber. Instead of white bread, eat whole grains. Add beans to your soups or apple slices to your salads. Fiber keeps you feeling fuller longer and lowers your risk for high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. It can also avoid constipation.

These are some of the ways that you can age gracefully. It’s never too late to start improving your health. Consider that it takes just a few months to lower your cholesterol levels with the right diet.
